Nothing But Sunshine & Carefree Days Ahead

Oh sweet, sweet June! How did we reach thee already? We have officially reached the half-year mark, as well as the official beginning of summer! June, named after Juno, the goddess of marriage, is the sixth month of the year, and is one of the four months with a length of 30 days. Just like the month of May, no other month begins on the same day as June. This is also the month with the longest daylight hours of the year.

It's National Safety Month!

Did you know that injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages — and they are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. The good news is everyone can get involved to help prevent injuries.

During National Safety Month, Absolute Health Care's goal is to help reduce the risk of injuries. We encourage you to learn more about important safety issues like prescription painkiller abuse, transportation safety, and slips, trips, and falls.

Prescription painkiller abuse:
Prescription painkiller overdoses are a growing problem in the United States, especially among women. About 18 women die every day from a prescription painkiller overdose — more than 4 times as many as back in 1999.

Transportation safety:
Doing other activities while driving — like texting or eating — distracts you and increases your chance of crashing. Almost 1 in 5 crashes (17%) that injured someone involved distracted driving.

Slips, trips, and falls:
One in 3 older adults falls each year. Many falls lead to broken bones and other health problems.

You can make a difference. Find out ways to help reduce the risk of these safety issues.

Stay Hydrated in the Summertime!

Drink your water people! We cannot say this enough. Staying hydrated is critical to everyone's good health, not just seniors alone. Your body needs water in order to function properly.

Here are the ten warning signs for dehydration:

  1. Thirst
  2. Sunken eyes
  3. Dry mouth
  4. irritability
  5. Confusion
  6. Dizziness
  7. Muscle weakness
  8. Decreased urine output
  9. Increased heart rate
  10. Fever

Don't wait for the warning signs to act. Drink water regularly throughout the day.  Dehydration is one of the leading causes of hospitalization for seniors. As a person ages, total water in the body decreases and this can also reduce the sense of thirst. ensure that your senior loved one is getting the proper amount of water by drinking 6-8 glasses of water throughout the day. The will fill much better as a result.

Culinary Corner

The recipes for this month were chosen in honor of Father's Day and we definitely had with our dads in mind! 

First up, we have an easy slow cooker recipe for a barbecue beef brisket. Slow cooked and with BBQ sauce nearly made from scratch? Sounds like a home run to us! 

Next we have a recipe for chocolate stout beer brownies! Even if dad isn't much of a beer drinker, something tells us these are delicious all the same!

We feel either of these yummy recipes would be appreciated and would surely make a better gift for pop than a tie again!
